Small heart tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a hand with the fingertips raised toward the camera. A small, thin-lined heart outline sits on the side of the far-right finger near the knuckle. The ink is dark and the background is almost black, which keeps the focus on the small tattoo and the nails.

The fog comes off the Trent before you do, so it is you who has to walk the towpath to fetch Ned Pardoe from the lock cottage before the water drops. You know the way by the green gate, the dog asleep under the sluice, and the bent willow that scratches your cheek every spring. Nobody on the cut talks about the winter it froze solid, but you were the one who broke the ice at the mooring with your father's boathook, and you have never quite forgiven the river for letting you do it.

Your father's barge, the Wren, carried coal down and brought bricks back, and you learned to splice rope before you learned your letters. He painted roses along the cabin side and a castle on the cratch board, and when he died the paint was already fading, so you went over the roses again in the same red, slowly, the way he showed you, holding the brush the way he held his pipe. Ned has a tin of lock tickets he is paid to stamp and never does, and he hands you one now with a grin, pressed flat and warm from his pocket.
The ticket is blank except for a small heart he has drawn in the corner with a pin dipped in ink, the lines so fine they nearly vanish. He says it is for luck, and you tell him luck is for people who can afford to wait, and then you take the pin off him and draw a second heart beside his, slightly crooked, because you want him to know the water doesn't care about tidiness. You tuck the ticket in your coat and go down to the Wren.
By the time the sun clears the poplars the frost has gone from the cabin window except for one patch where your breath has left its shape. You look at it a long while before the glass goes clear, and you do not wipe it.
