Snowflake tattoos across a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests flat on a wooden table, showing several small snowflake tattoos on the back of the hand and down the middle finger, with tiny dots scattered between them. The snowflakes are drawn in thin, even lines in a muted blue-grey ink with no shading. The composition is a close, top-down view with the fingers spread, and the warm brown wood sets off the pale skin and the cool tones of the ink.

The ferry is late again, so you sit at the kitchen table of the post office on Tallow Isle and count the blue stamps. Nobody on the island has ever sent a parcel north in winter. Mrs Ferrier used to say the cold was a rumour the mainland spread to keep its prices up. You believe her until the box arrives, wrapped in brown paper and smelling of pine, with a note in your grandfather's square capitals: FOR THE GIRL WHO ASKED WHAT SNOW TASTES LIKE.

Inside are forty sheets of tissue paper, each folded into eighths and cut with a penknife. You unfold them one by one on the scrubbed wood. Some have six arms, some have eight, and one has a crooked seventh arm where his hand must have slipped. Between them lie small pale dots he pressed into the paper with the tip of a pencil, a trail of stars that never quite joins up. You hold a flake up to the window and the light comes through the holes like a map of somewhere you have never been.

The ferry horn sounds from the bay. You should go down to the jetty and sign for the crates of tinned peaches, but instead you tear a fresh sheet from the pad by the till and fold it the way he showed you on the summer you were nine. Your scissors are blunt. The first snowflake comes out lopsided, and you laugh alone in the empty office, and the sound of it fills the room the way the cold never could.
