Two small nigiri sushi tattoos in fine line

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image is a two-panel photograph of two small tattoos, each a simple outline of a nigiri sushi piece. The left shows a salmon slice on a rice base, and the right shows a prawn with a band of nori and a curled tail. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoos are in black ink on pale skin against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dessa had been shaping rice for the counter at the Quayside Sushi Bar for eleven years, and in all that time nobody had ever asked her to cut a prawn the way Mr Pell wanted it. He sat at the far end of the bar every Thursday with his reading glasses pushed up on his forehead, tapping a laminated card. "Tail curled, always. A prawn with its tail straight is a prawn that's given up."

On the third Thursday of October the salmon ran short. Dessa had to slice the last fillet so thin that the light came through it, and when she laid it over the rice it looked like a pale sunset on a cold sea. Mr Pell took one look and said nothing, which was worse than any complaint. He ate it slowly, wiped his fingers on a folded napkin, then slid a ten pound note across the wood. The prawn was still on the plate, tail up, its band of nori pressed on tight like a strip of bandage.

Dessa kept that note in the till for years and never spent it. When the bar finally closed and the fishmonger came to clear the cold room, she found the old laminated card taped inside the cabinet door. The prawn was drawn in biro with its tail curled exactly as he liked. Underneath, in smaller letters, he had written: Tell them I liked the tail.
