Matching shark fin and flower forearm tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show a pair of matching single-line tattoos. The left shows a shark fin rising above a wavy waterline, and the right shows a rounded shape with an open mouth, a dot for an eye and a small flower beside it, on the same line. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, against a plain pale skin tone and a dark background.

The stock pond froze on the second Tuesday of January, and by the weekend the ducks were waddling across it as though they held the deeds. Sam bet Ada a week of mucking out that the ice would take the weight of a grown man. Ada said it wouldn't take a wellington boot. They settled it with a paper bag of boiled sweets and a walk to the middle at first light.

Halfway out, the ice began to sing, a long low note like a wet finger round a glass. Sam stopped dead and grinned. "Shark," he said, pointing at the far bank, where a cardboard fin he'd cut from a cereal box at Halloween was still stuck upright in the frost. Ada laughed so hard she nearly lost her footing, and the ice gave a sharp crack that ran away from them under the reeds.

They both froze. Nothing went through. The pond held, grumbling, and when they edged back to the bank on their bellies Sam was quiet in a way she had not heard before. "Dad used to say the pond keeps what it's given," he said. Ada didn't know what to say to that, so she gave him the last orange sweet, the one he always saved for himself.

In March, when the ice had gone grey and then gone altogether, Ada scratched a plump round fish into the mud by the gate with a stick, mouth open and a dot for an eye. She tucked a snowdrop in beside it, its head bent low, and watched the water creep back up to the line.
