Two outlined hands around a black heart on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open hands with cuffed sleeves, one above and one below, with a small solid black heart placed between them. The linework is a fine, even single-line outline with no shading. It is rendered in black ink only, and the design sits centrally on the side of the ribcage against plain, lightly freckled skin.

By the third night the snow had buried the lower windows of the Tallow Bell, and the only way from the taproom to the kitchen was the serving hatch, a hole no wider than a loaf. Mrs Abney called it the postbox. You had been using it since noon to send her questions and receive dishes of mutton in return, and she had been replying with nothing but a pair of pale wrists in starched cuffs, reaching through to set the plates down as carefully as if they were eggs.

Each evening you pushed a penny through with a folded slip, and each morning a slip came back with a single word on it: Eat. By the fourth day the words had grown into sentences. The bakehouse wall is thin, one read, and I can hear you counting the stairs. You laughed alone by the cold grate and pressed the paper flat against the splintered edge of the hatch, as though the wood might keep it.
The plough came up the valley road on Thursday, its lamp bobbing through the drift. Before first light you carried your bag down and stopped at the hatch. You put your hand through, palm up, and from the dark of the kitchen another hand came down to meet it, cuff rolled, knuckles dusted white with flour. It held yours for the length of one breath before a pan clattered and someone shouted for the boy. The inn was already greying behind you in the snow when you realised you had never paid for the mutton.
