Two small star tattoos on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two small starburst designs sit side by side on the upper back, each with a bright centre and eight soft, shaded rays. The linework is blurred and softly shaded rather than crisp, and the tattoos are set against plain skin with a little of the hair visible at the top of the frame.

The frost had got into the water trough again by four, so Ada broke the skin of ice with the heel of her boot while her brother Col held the lantern up to the lambing pen. Above the barn roof the sky was black and clean, the kind of cold that made the stars look sharpened. Col had been counting them since supper, out loud, the way their father used to, and he kept losing his place near the Plough.

The ewe in the end pen had been labouring since noon. Ada knelt in the straw with her sleeves rolled and felt for the feet the way Dad had shown her, one hoof, then the other, both pointing the right way. The lamb came in a rush of steam and silence, not breathing, and she cleared its nose with two fingers and swung it gently until it coughed.
Afterwards they sat on the upturned feed bin with the door open to the yard. Col said the new tenant at Hollins wanted to sell the top field for a solar array, and Ada said nothing, because she had already read the letter twice. Instead she pointed at the sky, where two stars hung low over the dark line of the wood, the brighter one a little ahead of the other as if walking.
"Those two always went up together," Col said. "Dad called them the dogs." Ada thought of the collie pups they had sold last spring, the pair who never once let each other out of sight. The lamb bleated behind them, thin and furious. Ada stood, wiped her hands on her coat and said they would keep the top field. Col grinned as if he had won something. Above the wood the two stars kept walking, softened at their edges by the frost hanging in the air.
