Two small swallow tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two small black swallow tattoos sit on the inner wrists of two arms, one on each side, with the birds in mid-flight with forked tails. The linework is simple and solid, with flat black fill and a small pink accent on each bird's head. The photo is taken from above with a soft, warm filter, and the hands rest against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the junction at Harrowgate Bridge, where the coal trains stopped to take water, a pair of swallows nested under the canopy above platform two. Every spring they came back from over the sea, and every spring the stationmaster swept the droppings off the bench and said nothing, because his mother had told him that swallows brought luck to any house they chose.

One April a girl called Ada Penhallow came up the stairs with a carpet bag and a ticket to a town she had never seen. She was leaving a farm where her brother had been kind and her father had not. She sat on the bench to wait for the Manchester train and watched the birds go in and out of the eaves, their black backs flat as slate, their forked tails opening like scissors, a rose-pink spot on each crown where the light caught it.

The train was late, so Ada counted swallows instead. Seven times they dropped down towards the rails and swung back up again, never once touching the cinders. On the eighth pass the female let a feather fall onto the bench beside her, and the male settled on the signal wire above and sang as though he had been paid to.

Ada picked up the feather and put it in her coat. When the train came she got on it, and she did not look back at the platform. The stationmaster always said the swallows stayed under that roof long after the coal trains were gone, and that somewhere in Lancashire a woman kept a black feather in a drawer and was never afraid of the road again.
