The train to Carrick Bridge was already breathing steam when Nell caught her brother's sleeve at the end of platform two. He had the ticket in one fist and the lamp in the other, and he was not going to look back, because their mother had told them that looking back at a station brought the trains late.

"Hold still," she said, and pulled his cuff up over his wrist. She had sat up all night with a needle warmed over the kitchen candle and a bottle of soot ink, pricking three loops into her own wrist first, then his, so that they would match. The knot came from their grandmother's old lace pattern: three petals chasing each other around a single seam that never ended.

"It'll wash off," he said.

"It won't. Grandmother's knots don't wash." She pressed her thumb over his mark until it stung. "Whenever you see that shape on a wall or a signpost, you'll know which way home is." The guard blew his whistle, and the brother climbed aboard without another word. The carriage window slid down a hand's width. Nell held up her wrist, and he held up his, three loops and one unbroken line against the brown glass. The train took the bend past the water tower and the knots went with it.

Nell walked back down platform two and found the stationmaster sweeping cinders into a heap. Every signpost in the county, he told her, had been painted with the same three-petalled knot since the railway came. She hadn't known that. She went home by the road anyway, counting the signs.
