Two trees and a figure on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the forearm shows two loosely drawn trees arching towards each other, with a small solid silhouette of a standing figure between them. The linework is sketchy and broken, with soft grey shading in the foliage and the trunks. The image is in colour-free tones against pale skin, with a grey paved ground filling the background.

Dear Ruth,

The two limes at the end of platform three have finally met over the footbridge, and Mr Okafor from the ticket office says they grew that way because the first stationmaster planted them to shade a man who came every Tuesday for thirty years. I said that was a lovely story. He said it was not a story, it was in the parish minutes, and he showed me the page with the ink gone brown. I have decided to believe him anyway.
I sat under the arch on my break this morning with a flask of tea gone lukewarm. The grey flags were wet from the night, and the branches made a sort of doorway with the sky showing through, hazy and bright in the gaps. Somebody had left a ticket for the 4.10 to Hallow Cross tucked into a knot in the trunk, unpunched, the card soft with weather. I know the hand that wrote the destination. It is your father's, the same careless loop on the H.
So I have not taken it down. I thought you should know that the old waiting room is being turned into a cafe in the spring, and the man from the council says the trees will have to come out for the new drainage. I told him they have been waiting a long while already, and that a tree can wait a little longer than a train. He laughed, though I was not joking.
Come up on the Thursday service if you can. Bring the good tin of biscuits. I will meet you at the arch.
Love, Margaret
