Two tribal horse head designs

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

Two solid black tribal horse head designs sit side by side on separate white backgrounds. The left horse has a patterned mane with small floral motifs and bold interlocking lines across the head, while the right horse has a flowing mane and spiral details within its solid black shapes. Both are rendered in black ink only with no shading or colour, and each design is shown in isolation.

Dear Nell, the mare finally let me braid her mane with primroses woven in, though Mr Harrow swore she'd kick the lot of us into the duck pond. She stood like a duchess while I worked the yellow heads in along the crest, and the old grey gelding from the next field leaned over the fence to watch, snorting like a bellows.

Ma's roses have gone mad this year, I'm sorry to say. Black spot all down the south wall, and I've been out with the sulphur every evening since Tuesday. The spiral iron gate Dad made has rusted through at the hinge, so the goats keep wandering into the cabbages. I've told Tom he's to fix it before the fete or I'll give his prize marrow to the pigs.

Yesterday I found Dad's old sketchbook at the bottom of the apple crate. Most of the pages are horses running in curling lines like smoke off a chimney. On the back cover, in his tidy hand, he'd written that a mane should be drawn like a river finding the sea. I laughed at the time. Now I think he meant you have to let it run where it wants and only steer it a little.

Come home at Whitsun and bring your good scissors. We'll plait her properly, and you can tell me whether I've got the spirals right. Your loving sister, Ada. P.S. The primroses wilted by supper, so I've pressed three of them in the sketchbook for you.
