Typewriter quote across upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a close-up of skin on the upper back with a four-line quote set in a black typewriter-style font, reading 'You're not a beautiful, unique snowflake'. The letters are solid black with slightly uneven, inked edges and a little fading, and the skin shows freckles and fine texture. Long brown hair falls along the left side of the frame, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the text.

Ada Thorne had been sent to the back room that winter to sweep, and she swept with the air of someone who believed her hands were made for finer work.

One morning, with frost on the yard and the windows still black, she stood at the bench and announced that no two loaves in the world were ever alike. She had read this in a book someone had left on the flour cart. Every crust blistered differently, every knot of dough took its own shape under the palm. She was, she said, as particular as bread.

Mrs Okonedo didn't look up from the tray she was scoring. She reached into the bin, took a pinch of flour, and tossed it into the air over the bench. The white cloud hung in the lamplight, turning slowly, each grain catching the glow. "Look at it," she said. "Tell me which one is yours."

Ada laughed, and then she stopped laughing, because she could not. They all glittered the same way as they fell, settling on the wood and the sleeves and the back of her wrist. When the first light came grey through the shutters, the flour lay across the bench like frost, and the bread went into the oven, and it came out brown and crackling and sold out by seven, every loaf as good as the next.
