Black lettering tattoo reading my food doesn't scream in a typewriter-style font, placed on the inner forearm.

Typewriter quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner forearm reading "my food doesn't scream" across two lines, set in a typewriter-style serif font. The lettering is solid black ink with crisp edges and no shading, and the skin tone is the only other colour in the frame. The text fills the centre of the image, with the wrist and arm running off at the edges.

Dear Gordon, I am typing this on the Olivetti Dad brought home from the council offices in 1971, so forgive the e, which has gone soft at the top and looks like a tired eye. Your mother says you have taken up keeping hens again and have named the whole flock after former Labour ministers. Good. A name makes it harder to wring a neck, and I have always thought that was the point of names.

The enclosed strip of paper came out of the ribbon tin when I was clearing the back bedroom. I typed it the autumn Haddow's pig went to market, the week I could not look at the bacon in the Co-op window. I tried a dozen letters to the editor about cruelty and every one jammed on the big words, so in the end I kept it to four words, which was about how long I had the nerve for.

Your mother thinks it is funny, and it is, a little. But I want you to know I was not being clever. I was hungry and ashamed and typing with two fingers at the kitchen table at two in the morning, and the machine gave me exactly the right amount of room.

I have left the ribbon in for you. The ink has faded to a grey ghost, but every word is still there if you hold it up to the window. Keep the hens. Mind the e.
