Typewriter quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm carrying a block of text in a typewriter-style font, set in four lines that run diagonally up the limb. The letters are solid black with clean, even edges and sit on a plain skin tone against a soft, textured fabric background. The composition is tight and centred on the tattoo, with the text clearly legible.

The landlady at Gull Rock House kept a ledger for the lodgers' sins and their sixpences, and when the herring boats came in late she would open it on the hall table and read out what she had written. Nobody thought it strange. Her son Amos had gone out on the Mary Ellen in March and not come back, and she wrote him into the book every night as if he were only out late at the chandler's.

Her lodger that autumn was a quiet man from Leeds who paid in advance and said little. He wanted a room facing the water and paper to write on. On the third evening he found the ledger open on the sideboard, its pages covered in her small hand, and he asked her why she did not write to the newspaper instead. She said the newspaper had no use for what she had to say. Write it down, she told him, in recollection and amazement, for yourself. Nobody else will read it right anyway.
He did not understand her until the storm in November, when the sea took the lower wall of the churchyard and laid bare a row of names nobody had visited in forty years. He sat up with her in the kitchen while she showed him how the book worked: every name entered was a thing she had seen clearly, and the sea could not take what was already written down.
In the morning he left his notebook on her table and caught the early train. When she finally opened it she found a single line typed on the parlour machine and pinned to the first page: Write in recollection and amazement for yourself. She read it twice, closed the cover, and put it in the drawer with the others.
