Dear Tam, the ferry didn't come again today, so this letter will sit in the Co-op with the tinned peas until the weather turns, and I can't tell you when that will be. I'm typing on Gran's old Olivetti at the kitchen table because its ribbon is the only thing on Eilean Glas that has never once let me down. The e has gone faint, so you'll have to squint at 'here', 'never' and 'heart'.

Mrs Gillies came by with a crab in a bucket and asked whether you'd been in touch. I said you were on the Morag Rose with the rest of the men, mending nets in some harbour I can't pronounce, and that you'd write when there was a post box in reach. She said that's what they all say. I didn't tell her I've taken to typing you a line every night, the same line, because it's the only one I've got that fits.

The lighthouse sweeps the water every minute, and I've started counting it as a kind of answer. Each time the beam crosses the kitchen window I think, there, that's him still out there.
