Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with a two-line quote set in a typewriter-style typeface, reading "i carry your heart with me" and "(i carry it in my heart)". The letters are rendered in solid black ink with clean, even edges and a slightly uneven, aged look. The arm fills the frame diagonally, with a dark background of pale vertical stripes behind it.

The Remington's E stuck the night the Brannock came in short two men, so Ada Pell, who kept the harbourmaster's ledgers, had to strike that key with the heel of her hand every time a name needed it. She typed them all anyway. Forty-one lines for the manifest, then a clean sheet for the widows, which the harbourmaster asked for and she did not want to write.

Her brother Tom had sailed on the Brannock, and she put his name at the top of the list before she could stop her hands. Then she found she could not stop at all. She typed the price of coal, the tide table pinned by the scullery door, and the sentence he always called out from the bottom of the stairs, Keep the step lamp lit, Ada, I'm coming up the hill. She typed it until the ribbon ran pale and the paper curled at the edges.

Nobody asked for that page. At dawn the harbourmaster carried the official sheets over to the post office, and the widows got their pennies and their neat typed condolences. Ada folded her private sheet into eighths, slid the carbon under the lid of the biscuit tin with the spare ribbons, and went back to the step lamp.

She lit it every night for thirty-one years. The E on that page always printed a shade lighter than the rest, as if the machine had been reluctant to say it, and Ada never once had it mended.
