The Olympia came into Pargeter's shop wrapped in brown paper and tied with the blue string his mother used for parcels. Mrs Achterberg would not come through the door. She stood under the awning on Silver Street with her umbrella furled and told him through the glass that her husband had typed on it every evening for thirty years and had never once been wrong about the weather.

Pargeter cleaned the platen, freed the sticky shift and rolled a sheet in to test the action. The keys struck the paper in their own time, slow and neat, and then stopped. The line read: Those who don't believe in magic will never find it. He pulled the sheet out and held it to the window. The ink was still wet, and he had not yet pressed a single key.

He laughed, rolled in a fresh sheet and typed the same words himself, every letter, to prove the machine was only his own hands. Then he typed the price of the repair underneath, and the Olympia stayed quiet. Mrs Achterberg came in out of the rain at last to collect it. She read the first sheet, folded it into her coat pocket and said nothing at all.

Next morning the shop bell rang before he had unlocked the door. The Olympia sat on his bench with its carriage returned to the far left, and one new line waited in the roller, typed by no hands he could see: You were always going to find it, Mr Pargeter. He did not believe a word of it, and he read it four times before he switched on the lamp.
