Black ink block lettering reading everything is gonna be alright across pale skin, shown in a black and white photograph.

Everything is gonna be alright lettering

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a bold sans-serif quotation tattooed in solid black ink across three lines: everything, is gonna be, and alright. The letters have crisp edges and solid fill with no shading, and the stark black and white photo makes the text stand out against the skin. The text fills most of the frame, with a dark, blurred background on the left.

Hush now, pull that chair closer, the vending machine down the corridor has finally stopped its humming. You want to know about Mrs Okonedo and the bus timetable? Sit still, I'm getting to it. She came up to ward six the winter the boiler failed, clutching a carrier bag with her husband's cardigan folded inside it, and she would not let a single nurse touch the cardigan. Every night at two she sat on the edge of the bed in the side room and read the same sentence off a card her grandson had written in marker pen. Everything is gonna be alright. Big square letters, pressed so hard the felt had gone through in places.

Now, the night porter, Dermot, he thought the card was nonsense. He said so over the tea urn. Nothing is alright at two in the morning, he said, that's when the bad news comes up the stairs. But I watched him that week, and he took to reading the card himself when he thought nobody was looking, moving his lips like a schoolboy with a hymn sheet.

On the Thursday the bed alarms went off all at once, the way they do when the weather turns, and for an hour there was no room to breathe. When the dust settled Mrs Okonedo was asleep in her chair with the card open on her knee, and Dermot was sitting on the floor beside her, his back to the radiator, eating a biscuit out of the packet.

He looked up at me and said, well, it's gone four and nobody has died. Which in this place, I can tell you, counts as a sort of alright. So there's your story. Now go and get that kettle on, and mind the cardigan on the way past.
