Mountain and pine forest design in an oval

Black and grey · Flash

The design shows a mountain peak rising above a still lake, with a large sun and layered clouds in the sky. The lower part of the oval is filled with dark pine trees of varying heights against the water. The linework is fine and hatched, with shading that builds depth on the mountains and clouds, all in black ink or graphite on a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Thorley had the walled garden below Hollin Crag, and her grandmother had told her that the sun must be fed before it could sleep. So each evening she carried a basket of windfall pears down through the pines to the still water and set them on the flat stone at the edge.

One October the basket came back full. Nobody had taken the pears. A boy stood on the far shore, thin as a rake handle, holding a lantern that was not lit. He said he had walked out from under the mountain because it had grown too tall to live beneath. He asked for bread. Mags gave him half her loaf and the other half to the sun, as was proper, and the sun took it and sank a little further behind the peak.

The boy stayed through the winter in her lean-to. He mended the gate, learned which pines would bear cones and which only shed needles, and in February he told her the lake was only deep enough to hold one reflection at a time. She did not believe him until the night he left, when the mountain's face in the water went blank and the sun rose again with nothing on the far side of it.

In spring she found the lantern on the flat stone, cold and full of rain. She filled it with pears and set it out for the sun every evening after that, and when the light went down behind the crag the lake took it in slowly, like a cup being filled.
