Umbrella and panther on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A colour tattoo on the inner forearm shows a grinning panther head in black with yellow eyes, and beneath the elbow a purple and black umbrella with eyes, yellow lightning bolts and raindrops. Bold black outlines and flat solid fills give it a classic bold-line finish. Part of another tattoo of a hand and leaves is visible at the top of the frame against a dark green top.

Sit nearer the stove, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, for the wind's got into the rigging again. You want the tale of the Gannet's last trip? Then listen. Old Mags Teague kept a black cat that slept under her bunk and a tin umbrella she would not let anyone else hold. Every skipper in Peterhead knew her as the woman who could smell a squall three hours before the glass dropped.

That autumn the sky over the bay turned the colour of wet slate and the clouds came down low enough to snag on the masts. Mags took the umbrella off its hook and opened it in the wheelhouse, and the panther padded out from under the bunk and sat on the hatch like a bishop at a christening. Nobody asked her why. The lads just tied off their lines and kept their heads down.

Here's the thing about storms. They are not wicked, only greedy for something to chase. The panther went up over the rail, black as a coal sack, and ran the lightning down the way a collie runs a hare. Every bolt that came for the Gannet struck the umbrella's ribs and split into yellow sparks that spat into the sea. The rain fell only where Mags pointed her finger, and that was nowhere near the decks.

We came home on the morning tide with forty crates of haddock and not a hair singed. Mags still keeps that umbrella on the hook by her door. Ask her about it and she only says the weather had a pride to it, and somebody had to take the wind out of its sails. Now pass the bottle along, and leave the lamp burning.
