Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a solid black umbrella silhouette sitting above the word SUPREME in uppercase block lettering. The letters are filled with dark ink, and the umbrella has a simple shape with a pointed tip and a single shaft. The photograph is taken close up from behind, with the skin tone, dark hair and black clothing framing the design, and a small part of another tattoo is visible at the lower edge.

The band at the Palais has been stuck on the same slow foxtrot since half nine, and the rain drumming on the skylight has fallen into step with it. You stand by the cloakroom hatch with your umbrella furled under one arm, black silk gone shiny at the ribs, and Mrs Pargeter tells you the lad from the Ritz has asked after you twice already.

Outside, the poster for the Saturday contest still hangs in the doorway, its corners curling in the damp. Someone has painted a bold umbrella above the word SUPREME in block capitals, and the letters have run a little at the bottom where the wet got in. Every couple who comes through the doors pauses to read it, then pretends they didn't.

When the band finally stops for the interval, you walk out onto the floor and do the thing nobody in Margate has ever done under a roof: you pop the umbrella open. It cracks like a pistol. The room turns. Mrs Pargeter drops a tray of cups. For one bright second the shadow of the canopy falls across the dancers' shoes like a hat pulled low over the whole hall, and the lad from the Ritz laughs so hard he has to hold onto the piano.

You furl it again before the bandleader can object. The contest is only ever remembered for its prize. But when you step out at midnight the rain has stopped, and the poster still hangs there, SUPREME running down into the wet pavement as if it has somewhere better to be.
