Mrs Penhallow had nine umbrellas in the hall stand at Gull Rest, and every one of them came back from the beach soaked, sandy and furious. On the morning the new lodger arrived, she counted them twice before she let him in, as if one might have wandered off to the cliffs on its own.

He was a sign-writer, he said, down from Leeds to repaint the pier's old lettering before the council noticed the damp. He carried his brushes in a tobacco tin and a black umbrella that had lost two spokes. He hung it on the stand beside hers, and it looked, Mrs Penhallow thought, like a crow that had given up.

The pier sign had read SUPREME for sixty years, the S flaking to a ghost. He worked on it through three days of drizzle, lettering each capital upright and tall, stretching the R and the E until the word stood against the grey like a wall. On the last afternoon he painted a small black canopy above it, one clean silhouette, and climbed down to find the rain had stopped.

That evening Mrs Penhallow took his umbrella from the stand, opened it on the step and watched the wind try to lift it. It held. In the morning the lodger was gone and the sign was shining, and on the hall table lay a single pound coin, balanced on the stand where his umbrella had hung.
