Umbrella couple in an ornate frame

Ribs · Mixed · Photo

An ornate scrolled frame encloses a scene of two figures sharing an umbrella on a rainy path, with bare trees and a large dark shape behind them. The linework is fine and the shading is soft grey, with a small amount of red on one figure's clothing and a few red drips at the bottom of the scene. The frame is centred and fills the skin area, with the scene set inside an oval.

The band packs up at eleven, and the caretaker starts stacking chairs before the last waltz has left the room. You stand under the gilt mirror by the cloakroom hatch, watching rain bounce off the pavement beyond the glass doors, and you realise you have no umbrella and no plan. Behind the hatch, Mrs Oakes keeps the lost property in a tea chest, and there you find a black umbrella with a bent spoke and a luggage tag reading 'Halloran, Room 9'.

Ruth is still in the doorway with her shoes in one hand. The red silk scarf is knotted at her throat, the one that caught the light all evening, and when she sees the umbrella she laughs at you properly for the first time since you arrived. 'That belongs to a dead man,' she says. 'Or a very old one from Ramsgate.' You open it anyway. The spokes creak like rigging, and the two of you step onto the promenade, where the lamps have melted into gold smears on the wet stone.

The path runs along the cliff past shuttered kiosks and bare sycamores, the sea somewhere below making a sound like a crowd that has forgotten the tune. Halfway along she stops and looks back at the hall, its windows still glowing, and says her father proposed to her mother on that floor, under that same mirror, and the umbrella is the only thing from that night he kept. You tilt the handle a little higher over her head and do not ask what became of him.

At the foot of the steps, a drop of red lands on the stone beside your shoe. She sees you look at it. It is only dye from the scarf, she says, and it has never once stayed where she put it. You tell her the umbrella will keep it dry. Neither of you believes that, and you walk on anyway, the dark headland rising behind you, the hall's lit window shrinking in the rain until the two of you are small enough to fit inside it.
