Umbrella silhouette on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a small solid silhouette of a woman in a long dress and hat, holding an umbrella up above her head. The figure has no interior linework or shading and is filled in with black ink only. It sits on the outer upper arm against plain pale skin, with the blue top and the wearer's long hair visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Hester,

The wind has got into the Bramley trees again and half the windfalls are rolling about the lane like lost hats. Your umbrella is still in the hall stand where you left it in June. I have not moved it. Mrs Gale says it is bad luck to shut a thing that has only just been opened, so I leave it half open by the door and the dog walks round it.
The pickers came in on Monday, three girls from the village and a boy called Eli who eats more than he picks. We have had a fine August, all hot mornings and slow dusks, and the Worcesters are so heavy the branches touch the grass. Tom says we will not get the cider press going before the second week of September, but he said the same last year and we had it by the Tuesday. I wish you could see the top orchard at six o'clock, when the light goes low and gold and every ladder stands up black against it, like a figure waiting for the wind to change.
You asked in your last letter whether I still walk down to the gate on Sundays to watch the road. I do. I am not waiting for anyone, Hester. I only like to see how far the wind has carried the dust before it settles.
Come at Michaelmas if you can. Bring the umbrella, if you still want it. I will have the apples off the high branches by then, and there will be room in the loft for both of us.
Yours, with the cold tea, Margaret
