Umbrella-carrying nanny silhouette on shoulder blade
Back · Mixed · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a figure resembling Mary Poppins, holding an open umbrella in one raised hand and a carpet bag in the other, sits on the upper back. The figure is drawn with smooth, flat fills and no internal shading, and the skirt is coloured in blue and red-orange with a small green detail on the umbrella handle. The composition is set diagonally across the shoulder blade, with the umbrella floating in the upper left of the frame.

The lift at Haverlock Spire had stalled between the forty-first and forty-second floors, and Nell Tasker had been counting the hum of the dead cable for eleven minutes when the umbrella came sliding up past the grille like a dark sail. Behind it, boots first, came Miss Ottoline Brisk, who had been hired by the Oduya family to mind the twins and who had never once been seen using the stairs. She wedged her carpet bag against the gap, pulled out a folding stool, a tin of brass tacks and a spool of blue thread, and told Nell to take hold of the green handle and keep both feet on the stool.

The umbrella lifted them. It did not lurch or wobble. It simply rose, steady as a held breath, through the shaft and out onto the open face of the tower, where the wind off the Low Quarter pushed at their coats and the drone lanes split around them like water around a stone. Below, the city lit itself in squares. Ottoline unwound the blue thread and tied one end to the umbrella's spoke, and the other to Nell's wrist, and said that a thing which flies needs a line to remember where home is, or it forgets and drifts off over the reservoirs.
They came down on the balcony of the forty-second floor just as the lift shuddered back to life behind the glass. Ottoline folded the umbrella with three neat snaps, pressed it into Nell's hands, and tucked the carpet bag under one arm. She did not say goodbye. She stepped off the rail, and the wind took her coat and then the rest of her, and the twins came running out of the flat crying her name.
Nell stood there a long time with the handle in her fist. It was warm, as though someone had been holding it all along.
