Two facing silhouettes on the upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tattoo of two silhouetted profiles facing each other, one with what appears to be pointed ears and the other with a fuller head shape. The shapes are flat black ink with crisp, smooth edges and no visible shading or linework detail. The arm is raised against a pale background, and the model's face is turned away and out of frame.

Mrs Hale kept the lamp at Carrowby Halt, and every night the eleven-forty stopped there for nobody. The fox came up the cutting the winter her husband went to the mines in Wales and did not come back, and it sat on the platform edge with its back to the rails as though it were waiting for a ticket.

"You'll be wanting the last train," she said to it, because there was no one else to say it to. The fox looked at her with the flat patience of creatures who have seen a great deal of weather. She gave it the heel of her bread. It came every night after that, and she began to speak to it as if it were a lodger who paid no rent.
Come spring, a boy came down from the hill with a broken fiddle and a suitcase tied with string, asking for the Penhallow train. He had no coat. Mrs Hale put him in the waiting room by the stove and told him to sit still. The fox slipped in under the bench and lay with its nose on his boot. By morning the boy had stopped shaking, and the fox had stopped watching the door.
When the boy finally boarded, he turned at the carriage step and said the fox could come to the city too, if it liked. Mrs Hale laughed and said foxes do not ride trains. The fox sat on the platform until the lamps of the last carriage were gone, then trotted off into the cutting. Next winter the stationmaster found two sets of small footprints in the frost, one shod and one bare, going north together.
