Umbrella with banner on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The design shows a closed umbrella with a green and black handle shaped like a bird's head, with a brown tassel hanging from the shaft. Two small sparkle stars sit either side of the canopy, and a red ribbon banner across the lower section reads ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN in black capitals. Bold black outlines and flat fills of green, brown, red and navy give the piece a classic look against a dark background.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways across Hallam Market since six, and the awning over my stall has given up pretending. I have sold three umbrellas this morning, which is three more than I expected, and one of them went to a man who wanted the parrot-headed one because his late mother kept a grey parrot called Admiral. I didn't have the heart to tell him the handle was only painted wood. He paid in coppers and tipped his hat to the weather.
Mr Okonedo from the fish stall came over at noon with a cup of tea I hadn't asked for and said the sky over the canal looked like it had a grudge. I told him the forecast promised clearing by Thursday. He laughed and said the forecast had promised that last Thursday too. He is right, of course. Nothing this month has kept its word.
Which brings me to the card you sent. Anything can happen, you wrote, underneath a drawing of you sailing off the top of the Ferris wheel with your brolly open like a spinnaker. I pinned it to the frame beside the till, next to the ribbon banner I had printed for the shop. Your handwriting is worse than the sign painter's, but the sentiment reads fine.
I am closing early tonight, putting the kettle on, and watching the water run off the canopy in its neat little rivers. Come home soon. Bring the good biscuits, the ones with jam in the middle, and tell me what happened on the boat.
Love, Bea
