Traditional dagger on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A dagger with an ornate hilt and a long, tapering blade is shown on the forearm, angled diagonally across the skin. The outline is bold and dark, with the blade shaded from dark grey to orange and the hilt set with green gems and red highlights. Colour dominates the composition against the plain skin, with a soft, slightly blurred background.

The driver had been told the wrong hour, so he sat in the cab with the engine ticking while I walked the length of his trailer with a torch and a clipboard I had no intention of using. Harrow Bank is a poor crossing at three in the morning. The river runs fast under the bridge, and the wind comes off it like a blade laid flat against your cheek.

Halfway down the load, behind a pallet of tinned peaches, I found a wooden case no bigger than a cigar box. Inside, on green baize, lay a dagger with a hilt wound in brass wire and set with a green stone the size of a bean. The blade tapered to a point so fine it seemed to swallow the torch beam rather than reflect it, and where the steel met the guard someone had painted a band of orange that faded into grey, like a sky going out over water.

Procedure said I should log it, photograph it and call the duty inspector, who would arrive in forty minutes and take the case to a room with no windows. I held it instead and thought about my father, who worked this post before me and once told me that every border is only a line someone drew in a hurry. The stone caught my torch and threw a little green light across the tinned peaches.

I shut the case, wrote nothing down, and waved the lorry on. In the morning the inspector found an empty pallet and a clean log, and I found the case on my kitchen windowsill, where the light comes in green just before dawn.
