Cloud raining over a hand holding a rose
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a shaded cloud at the top with raindrops falling beneath it, each drop outlined and filled with banded lines. A thin rope runs from the cloud down to an outlined hand gripping a rose at the bottom right. The work uses dark linework with grey shading on the cloud and open, unshaded outlines elsewhere, set against pale skin on the upper arm.

The rain had not fallen on the Sand Hadra road for eleven years when the old carrier Yusuf Bellamy brought his camel train into the well at Kharrow. The water-keeper, a widow called Nell Ashby, was already counting the cups left in the cistern. She told him the cloud had sat over the ridge every afternoon since spring, grey and heavy, and had never once let a drop go.

Yusuf did not believe in clouds that kept their word. He said so, and she laughed and handed him a cup anyway. That night he sat at the foot of the well and saw a rope come down out of the dark, thin as a bootlace, swinging over the rocks until its end hung just above the stones. Something was tied to the bottom of it, a rose, and a pale hand had closed around the stem as if it had been waiting a long time to be used.
Nell came out with a lantern and said the old people called it the Holding Rope. Whoever takes the rose must keep hold until the cistern is full, and must not let go even when the drops begin to fall. Water came first as a line of beads sliding down the cord, each one swollen and trembling before it dropped into the sand. Yusuf took the rose from the hand, and the hand let him, and they passed the stem between them through the cold hours, their fingers stiff and their breath smoking.
By dawn the cloud had drifted east and the rope went up slowly, the way a line is drawn in from deep water. The cistern was brimming. Nell found the rose still in Yusuf's fist, its petals wet and dark, and she set it on the stone rim of the well where anyone passing on the Hadra road could see it.
