Unfold your wings script across upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script reading unfold your wings runs diagonally across the upper chest, following the line of the collarbone. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink sits crisply against the skin. The photograph is black and white, with a dark cord necklace visible at the top of the frame and the neck partly cropped.

The bridge at Sallow Ford had one gate and one rule, and everyone in the valley knew the rule from the cradle. Folded small, a bird passes under any wire. Ilse had learned it from her grandmother, who had learned it from a ferryman who swore he had seen it work. So when the barrier arm came down across the planks, Ilse drew her shoulders in, pressed her elbows to her ribs, and kept her eyes on the dust between her boots.

The officer who came out of the hut was younger than his moustache. He held out his hand for her papers and frowned at the blank line where a name should go. 'Nothing to declare?' he asked. She shook her head. 'Only this,' she said, and drew from inside her coat a square of paper folded so many times it had gone soft as cloth. Her grandmother had written on it in pencil, in the last winter before the river froze, when her hands had stopped being steady enough for anything else.
The officer turned the paper over and then opened it one fold at a time. Ilse watched his lips move as he read the three words, slowly, the way a child reads a sign in a language it has not been taught. He said nothing. He only stepped back and lifted the arm of the barrier with his own hand.
Halfway over the planks the wind found the loose sheet in her fingers and took it. It sailed out over the brown water, turning once, then twice, and came down open on the far bank, where anyone passing could read it.
