Dotted constellation across a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a shoulder and upper back showing a fine dotted constellation tattoo. Dots of varying sizes link several clusters of stippled stars in a loose angular line that runs from the shoulder blade over the top of the shoulder. The background is dark and the skin is softly lit, so the tattoo reads clearly against the light tone of the skin.

You are the only one in the bakery at half four, so you get to decide which lamps to switch on. The dough has been folded and left to rest since midnight, and the flour on the bench looks like frost. Through the back window the sky is still the colour of wet slate, and the stars over the car park are making their last thin shift before the milk float rattles past.

Your mother taught you to read the sky from this yard, pointing with a floury finger at the seven bright points she called the Plough, then at the faint dusting beyond them that nobody bothered to name. She said those were clusters, whole nurseries of suns, too far apart to ever be seen as one thing from a kitchen step. You used to think the lines between them were the important part. Now you know the dots are what hold everything up.
At five the first tray goes in. You score the bloomers the way she showed you, quick and shallow, and they open in the heat like little mouths. By the time the window greys, the yard lamps have gone pale and the sky has thinned to a few stubborn points. You count them as you wipe the bench: four, then three, then one low over the bins that refuses to go.
You pull the last loaf from the oven and tap its base, hollow and sure. The bell over the door has not rung yet. Somewhere beyond the rooftops a van is idling, and you think about how every sky you ever learned was only ever a handful of small lights pinned to the dark, joined up by someone patient enough to draw the line.
