Vegetable garden sleeve across the forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a garden of vegetables and flowers, including asparagus, sweet peas, pumpkin, corn, morel mushrooms, beetroot, kohlrabi, chard, aubergine, artichokes and cherry tomatoes, wrapping around the forearm. The forms are rendered with soft shading and fine detail, with highlights and deeper shadows giving the produce volume. Bright reds, greens, purples and oranges dominate, and the design fills the frame from the top edge to the bottom edge across the arm.

The allotment wardens had given up on the Dunmore plot years before Ruth Ashdown took it on, so when the first asparagus came up through the nettles in April she went round the whole street with a trug full of spears, knocking on doors as if she were selling something. Mr Okonedo next door wouldn't take any. He said his wife had planted sweet peas along the fence in 1979 and they had come back every summer since without anyone's permission, and he saw no reason to be grateful to a stranger for the same thing.

By July the plot had gone wild in the best way. The kohlrabi had split their skins and the chard stems had turned the colour of boiled sweets. Ruth dug up a beetroot the size of a fist and left it on his step with a note that said only, Yours if you want it. In the morning the note was gone and the beetroot was gone and there was a jar of pickled onions on the fence post with a label in careful capitals: FOR THE PUMPKIN WOMAN.
She found the morels in the shady corner under the old pear in May, three of them, honeycombed and absurd, and carried them home in her cupped hands like eggs. She did not tell anyone where. She fried them in butter with a splash of sherry and ate them standing at the back door, listening to the neighbours' radio through the hedge.
In October the pumpkin was enormous and the aubergines had gone the colour of bruises. Ruth knocked on the fence at dusk and held out a cutting of the sweet pea, its roots wrapped in wet newspaper. Mr Okonedo took it. Neither of them said anything about the plants that had been there all along, climbing the wire with nobody's help.
