Verse tattoo on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a multi-line verse set in a classic serif typeface across the outer thigh, with a small ornamental flourish beneath the last line. The lettering is crisp and evenly weighted, with solid black ink on pale skin. A dark garment sits at the top of the frame, and the soft, out-of-focus background draws attention to the tattoo.

Snow had sealed the Ravensmoor road for three days, and Agnes Pell had run out of patience before she ran out of firewood. The coach passengers had dragged their chairs to the hearth and stopped talking about their appointments. Only the carrier's lad kept asking whether the pass would open by Thursday, and nobody answered him.

Agnes went up to the attic for more blankets and found a bundle of letters tied with string under the eaves. They were addressed to a woman called Rosamund at the mill house, and none of them had been posted. The last one was folded around a verse copied out in careful ink, the lines leaning slightly to the right as if the writer had been hurrying before the candle guttered. She read it twice standing in the cold, then carried it down to the kitchen and read it aloud, badly, because her spectacles were in the dining room.
Nobody laughed. The carrier's lad asked what flowers had to do with a hill, and the old tailor said that was the point, you had to climb the thing before you could see what was on the other side. Agnes smoothed the paper along its creases and pinned it above the bar, where the timetables used to hang.
On the Thursday the road was cleared by men with shovels and a borrowed plough. The coach left at ten. Agnes noticed afterwards that someone had taken the verse down before they went, and that the pin lay on the counter, bent into a small, careful hook.
