Vertical stem of daisy-like flowers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A slender stem runs vertically through the image, with seven daisy-like flowers of varying angles along its length. The flowers are drawn with fine, loose pencil linework and light shading in the petals and centres. The drawing is monochrome on a plain white background, with the design centred and filling the full height of the frame.

Dear Mags, you'll laugh at me, but I've pressed the last of the Aunt Vi's daisies between two tea towels and I've been carrying them about in my coat like a fool. The stall by the harbour wall had a whole bucket of them left over from the regatta, going for nothing, and the man selling them said they'd only wilt by Monday. So I bought the lot and brought them home on the bus, and Dennis looked at me as if I'd lost my wits.

The kitchen smells of vinegar again because the pickling jar split on the shelf above the stove. I have mopped it twice and it still isn't right, so I've given up and left the window open. The wind has got into the curtains and keeps lifting the one with the faded blue anchors. I keep meaning to take it down and wash it, but then I sit at the table with a cup going cold and the morning goes.
I tried to draw the stems the way Vi used to, one flower above another, all up the length of the paper, with the petals going round like the spokes of a ship's wheel. My hand's not what it was. The top one is lopsided and the middle two look like they've been sat on. But when I held it up against the window the light came through the gaps between the petals, and I thought of you saying, all those years ago, that everything worth keeping is a bit crooked.
I'm posting this with the drawing folded in it, so you'll have to excuse the creases. Come for tea on Sunday. I'll make the scones you like, and I'll show you where Vi's name is written on the back of the tea towel, in her hand, in pencil, where nobody would think to look.
