Cottage, pine trees and fox on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A cottage with a dark roof, a heart-shaped cutout in its pale wall and an orange door stands among dark pine trees and a rocky hill. Small hearts float in the sky above, and a fox sits on the grass at the base of the design. The bold black outlines and flat, solid fills are typical of traditional tattooing, with black and grey shading and touches of orange and green.

The fox came down from the pines on the third night of frost, and Hanne Tarrow, who had let the hearth die twice that week, watched it through the window rather than reach for the poker. Its coat was the rust of the door she had painted in spring, the only bright thing left in Ostmere since the mill closed and the boats stopped running out of Velle. She knew the fox by its limp and by the way it sat at the foot of the hill, where the grey stones heaped against the wall like sleeping sheep.

Her husband had cut the heart into the pale plaster himself, the year they married, so that the firelight would show through it to anyone walking the forest road after dark. Tobias had been gone to the northern ports for six winters now, and the heart had gone dark along with everything else. Hanne did not believe in signs. She believed in coal, which was scarce, and in bread, which was not. Still, each night she tore the heel of the loaf and set it on the step, and each night the crust was gone by morning.
On the sixth night the sparks from her chimney caught in the cold air and hung above the pines like scattered hearts, and she laughed aloud for the first time since autumn. She left the door unbarred and went up to bed. When she came down at first light the fire was banked and glowing, the kettle sat warm on the iron, and on the flagstone by the threshold lay a single russet hair beside a fresh heel of bread. Hanne picked up the hair, pressed it into the hollow of the heart, and went to fetch more wood.
