Dear Mr Hallam, the lift in Ashcombe House has been dead since Tuesday, so I am writing this on the back of a takeaway menu while sitting on the fourth step of the stairwell, which is the only place my knees will agree to stop. You will have had the same complaint from the other floors, I expect, so consider this my vote for a proper repair rather than another handwritten sign on the door.

I should also say something about my grandson Darnell, who lives with me on the eleventh floor and is the reason I climb these stairs twice a day. Most evenings the flat shakes with a gun that roars BRRAAGH through the telly, and most evenings Mrs Pike downstairs bangs her broom on her ceiling. Darnell waves his arms at the sensor on top of the set like a conductor who has lost his orchestra. I have told him the console is for men who have gone soft, but he says it is a chainsaw gun, Nan, and that is different.

Last Saturday he and three boys from the block played a tournament until the sun came up, with a plate of chips going cold between them and a red cup sweating on the carpet. When it was over he pushed a controller into my hands, the one with PLAY HARD across the front, and told me to press the big green button. I did. Nothing happened, and he laughed until he had to sit down. So I am asking you to fix the lift, Mr Hallam. The boy needs somewhere to go besides these stairs, and so do I.
