Sit closer, the lot of you, because the fire won't hold past the second verse. It hissed when it breathed, and the Pettigrew boys ran alongside it all the way to the depot fence, swearing it was a bear that had swallowed a man.

He traded for his keep with odd things. A dead radio. A pistol that shot blue light and nothing else. A glass bottle of brown fizz he sipped on the porch each evening, while a little box on his wrist chattered numbers at nobody. The town gave him a room above the feed store, and he paid in bottle caps stamped with a star, which pleased the feed store man very much.
The ammo box stayed locked under his bed. He never opened it, and that was the trouble. When the wrist box went quiet in September and the dogs stopped barking at the ridge, the whole town began to wonder what a man keeps in steel that he won't lift without a rope. Old Ma Gilchrist said it held the end of the world. So they broke in while he slept.
Inside was a child's toy lizard, two syringes of something cloudy, and a pie crust gone to stone. Hollis came down the stairs in his socks, looked at the lot of them in the feed-store light, and said, 'Well, I did say it was heavy.' Then he fetched his rope, and the boys followed him up to the ridge.
