Nobody had claimed the sheet of drawings in four months, so when Pauline Gedge finally logged it under Miscellaneous Paper, she had to decide what sort of object it was. A rifle, a square face with crossed-out eyes, a unicorn with its ears laid back, a bag of sweets she half remembered from her own childhood. Someone had drawn them all in the same thick black line, as if they had been copied from a dream by a person who did not entirely trust dreams.

She tried to match it to the shelves. The skateboarder was a boy from the 14:10 to Hull, she was almost sure, the one who had left his board wedged behind the radiator in the waiting room. The two cartoon men she could not place, though one had a quiff like a wave about to break. The raised middle finger she decided belonged to nobody and everybody, which was how most of the claims at the counter went.

On the fourth Thursday a man in a wet anorak came to the hatch and asked, without looking at her, whether anything had turned up with a horse on it. She slid the sheet under the glass. He studied it for a long time, then laughed once, quietly, and said the patterned chair was his mother's, the one she had sat in for forty years waiting for the phone to ring. He signed for it with a pen on a chain.

Pauline filed the paper back in its folder, tucked under the unicorn, which seemed the least likely of the lot to be lost again.
