Viking warrior portrait on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bearded Viking warrior wearing a horned helmet with a decorated brow fills the calf, looking forward with a stern expression. The face and beard are built from fine, layered shading with soft grey tones and strong contrast in the helmet metalwork. The image is a close, straight-on photograph of the leg against a plain white tiled floor and wall.

Mind the rope, and sit down before the flap lifts, because the wind off the marsh has teeth tonight. You want the story of Hallvard Grimsson's helmet? Then hush, for my knees are older than the Ferris wheel and I'll not tell it twice. The helmet had horns, two of them, curled like a ram's, and every child on the Thames fair thought it had come straight from the gods.

Hallvard won it at dice from a travelling smith who swore the horns were hammered from a bull's last rage. He wore it through three winters, through the fog that rolled up the estuary and through the long nights in the ale tents where men told lies louder than the fiddles. His beard grew down to his belt and he braided it with copper wire, and when he frowned the whole crowd went quiet, because a frown like that could split a cask.
One autumn a girl from the salt pans came to his booth asking for a man who could carry a message across the water. Hallvard looked at her, at the rope burns on her wrists, and he lifted the helmet off and set it on the table. 'Horns are for showing off,' he said. 'Take the boat. Keep the helmet for the day you need to be seen.' She rowed out under a grey sky, and the helmet hung on the nail by his door for eleven years.
When the fair packs up for the season, they say you can still hear iron ringing against the boards if the wind comes from the north. Hallvard never came back to claim it, and the horns have gone a little green with rust, which is how you know it was real. So if you ever find a helmet on a nail in a fen cottage, don't hang your coat on it. It is still waiting for the girl to row home.
