Vintage airship on the thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a old-fashioned airship with a long, rounded envelope covered in a lattice of crosshatched lines, tail fins at the rear, and a gondola slung beneath with two tiny figures and a small flag. The linework and hatched shading are in black ink with soft grey tones, giving an engraved, illustrative look. The airship runs horizontally across the outer thigh, with the skin curving gently around the design.

My dearest Hettie, the wind has not stopped since Thursday, and the Marchioness has taken to her cabin with a bottle of lavender water and a grievance against the cook. I write this from the gondola, which is smaller than you would credit and smells of brass polish and burnt sugar, because Captain Orme insists the stove must be kept lit for the sake of the gas bags. He says it keeps the envelope warm. I say it keeps him warm, and the rest of us in a sort of sour stew.

We crossed the Wirral coast at dawn, and below us the fields lay stitched in green and brown like a sampler somebody had given up on halfway. Mr Pellow, the surveyor, was sick over the side twice before breakfast and then wrote a sonnet about it, which he has promised to read to the Society. Young Tobias keeps the flag folded in his coat. He will not tell me what it is for, only that his grandfather carried it up a mountain in a country that no longer has a name on the maps.
Yesterday, when the cloud split open, we saw the sea silver underneath us and a single tall ship turning slowly, as if she wished to be admired. Orme dipped the envelope in salute. Every one of us leaned to the same rail and the whole airship tipped like a boat, and for one moment I thought we would simply tip out of the sky altogether. We did not. We only laughed until we were hoarse.
If this reaches you before I do, tell the Society I have seen the sea from above and it is exactly as grey and generous as they claimed. Keep my chair warm. I shall want to hear everything about the lectures, though I fear you will have to tell it to me in person, since I am told we descend at Tuesday's tide.
