Ringed planet on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A ringed planet, similar to Saturn, sits on the back of a lower leg with a thin ring wrapping around it. The planet is shaded with dense horizontal striations of fine black lines that build up tonal bands across its surface, with a bold outline on the lower edge. The image is in black and grey against a plain pale skin tone and soft grey background.

Dear Tom,

The Bramley trees are heavy this year and Dad has given up propping the limbs, so we're picking from the ladder all week. You asked in your last card whether the orchard still looks the way it did when you were small. It does, mostly. The grass between the rows has gone the colour of biscuit and the wasps have found the windfalls under the Discovery trees, and every evening the light comes through the rows in flat stripes, one band of gold, then a band of shade, then gold again, laid across the grass like the pages of a book somebody has left open.

I went out last night with the old tin bucket to fetch the last of the Egremonts and stood under the far tree longer than I meant to. Mrs Pryce's boy was on the wall with a torch, trying to find the lamb that got through the gap, and the sky over the top field had that thick green-grey look it gets before rain. I thought of the picture you sent of Saturn, the one your teacher pinned above the sink. You wrote that the rings looked like someone had drawn them with a ruler, and that the planet itself looked like a stack of sliced peaches. I laughed at that. But standing there I saw what you meant, the bands going round and round in the dusk like the rows of trees running off into dark.

Dad says the ladder needs mending before the pickers come on Saturday. I've told him you'll be home for it, so don't you dare make me a liar. Bring the good saw, the one with the red handle, and we'll see whether the top rung holds.

Love, Aunt Bea
