Humpback whale with geometric lines
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A humpback whale swims across the upper arm, with its head, pectoral fin and tail fluke built up from stippled dots that create the shading. Thin black lines form overlapping triangles and a rhombus behind the whale, and a solid black circle sits to the upper right. The piece uses only black ink and grey tones against the skin.

The chart said there was nothing off Harrow Ness but deep water, and Tobias Greave had sworn at that chart for eleven winters. He was a chartmaker in Whitby, a man who had never once been seasick and never once seen what he drew. So when the mate of the Ellen Marr came ashore with a whale's tail sketched on a wet scrap of sailcloth, Greave took the pen from his mouth and laughed until he coughed.

The mate was a girl called Hester Bale, eighteen and stubborn, and she did not laugh. She had watched a humpback rise beside the ship three evenings running, pale-bellied and slow, and she had watched it lead the bow around a shoal no one had charted. Each time it dived, the sea went quiet and dark as spilt ink. Greave took the sailcloth, squinted at her crude lines, and saw what she meant: a triangle of bearings where the sun rose through the rigging, and a rhombus where the swell turned back on itself.
He drew the whale into the chart that winter, a rough thing in the margin, with the shoal marked in a careful hand and a solid black circle over the place where the sun went down on the longest day. Ships still sail that route. The masters say the water runs easy there, and nobody argues with them. Greave never went to sea again, but he kept the chart pinned above his desk, and whenever the ink ran thin he dipped his pen and mended the circle so it would never fade.
