Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed tattoo of a classic 1950s-style coupe in profile, with a rounded body, chrome trim and a whitewall tyre. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft highlights on the bodywork and dark smoky clouds behind the car. The tattoo fills the forearm, shown against a black leather surface and a wooden floor.

The car came aboard at Selby in the wet spring, lashed under a tarpaulin on the stern deck of the Harriet, and Mary Keld would not say who had sold it to her husband. Lock-keepers said it was a grey coupe with a rounded back and chrome along its flanks, the kind of motor a travelling man drove too fast for the lanes. Its owner had left it at the dock with the keys in the ignition and no name on the bill of sale.

It would not run on the river, and nobody asked it to. Each evening the clouds came down low over the water, dark as coal smoke, though no engine was burning. Tom Keld swore he saw the whitewall tyres turn when the lock gates opened, and his mother told him to mind the mooring rope and leave the motor be.

At Ferrybridge the lock-keeper's daughter stood on the towpath and asked what the car was waiting for. Mary said she didn't know. The girl said a car like that wanted a road, and the road wanted a driver who had somewhere to be. So Mary sold it to her for the price of one good coat, and the car went up the hill with its lights on and the clouds went with it.

That night the deck was dry for the first time since Selby. In the morning the tarpaulin lay folded on the bank, and tyre tracks ran inland through the mud, away from the water, as if the Harriet had only ever been a place to wait.
