Red classic car on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large tattoo of a red vintage car with a chrome grille, bumper and wheel, shown in profile on the inner forearm. The shading is smooth and photographic, with highlights on the bodywork and reflective silver on the chrome. Soft yellow and green washes sit behind the car, which fills most of the frame against a dark denim background.

Sit down nearer, the back row can hear me fine. Mind the generator, it coughs when the lights go up. Now, you want to know about the red car, the one that came in on the back of Dougie Pell's lorry the summer the Harvest Fair went to Cleethorpes. Everybody saw it and nobody bought it, because it had a grille like a kipper-smoker's mouth and the chrome on it hurt your eyes at four in the afternoon.

Pell had won it at cards off a man in Hull who swore it had belonged to a crooner. Every night it sat by the dodgems with its bonnet up, and every night the girl who ran the candyfloss stall, Nell Arkwright, walked past it slower than she needed to. She was seventeen and had a mother who wanted her married to the boy from the bakery. Nell only wanted to drive something that shone.
So one night in August, with the rides shut and the moon hanging over the big wheel like a dropped penny, she turned the key Pell had left in the ignition. The engine caught on the third go. She took the car down the empty promenade with the headlamps off, just to see if she could, and the sea kept pace on her left like a dog that had decided to come along.
Pell found the car back in its spot at dawn, one wing polished, the chrome still warm. Nell was asleep in the candyfloss van with sugar on her chin and a grin nobody could make her explain.
