Nell had sewn the headband three times before the bride would agree to it. Ribbon the colour of boiled sweets, a border of white beads that Mrs Okonedo had sourced from a shop in Margate, and at the back a stiffened panel she had painted herself with a fan of rays, the way the old sign painters used to fill a window behind a name. "It looks like a halo that's been to sea," the bride said, turning in the mirror above the bakery's back sink, and Nell laughed so hard she had to sit down on a flour sack.

The wedding was at two, in the chapel above the harbour, and by half past one the wind had come round to the north and the bunting was cracking like gunfire along the front. Nell had a pin between her teeth and a rose of silk in her fist, the one she had been saving since spring, dyed the pink of a cheap postcard. She pushed it into the bride's hair where the dark coils were held up with bobby pins, and the rose sat there as if it had been growing there all along.
Then the bride's cousin came running up the back steps with news that the vicar had gone down with flu, and the wind took the chapel door off its hinge. Nell watched the bride's face fall and then rise again, steady as a lighthouse. "We'll go to the pier," she said. "Nobody's ever married on a pier with a fan of light behind them, have they?"
They went. The sun broke through over the water, and the rays on the headband caught it exactly, so that for the length of the vows the bride seemed to be standing in her own small sunrise, and the rose in her hair did not move at all.
