Dear Maureen,

The Brightwater came in on Tuesday with eleven stone of haddock and a cook who has stopped eating fish. Ronnie Gage, who has fed this fleet on pan-fried cod for nineteen years, now sits in the galley peeling carrots with the face of a man at a funeral. Skipper Haddow says it's a phase. Ronnie says it's a conscience. Neither of them has been sober since Hull.

Last week, while we were hauling off the Dogger, Ronnie drew a heart on the back of a fish ticket with a biro. One unbroken line, no shading, and inside it he wrote a word in joined-up letters that sloped like the swell. The word was Vegan. Haddow read it upside down and asked if it was a new brand of sardine. Ronnie didn't laugh. He folded the ticket into his oilskin and said he'd meant it as a promise, not a joke.

I thought about that all the way back up the Humber. A promise you draw with a biro and carry in your coat is either the daftest thing a man can do or the only honest one, and I've decided it's the second. Haddow has finally handed him a tin of chickpeas and a bag of oats, which he says are 'for the fleet's morale'. Ronnie is grinning like he's won the pools.

He asked me to tell you he's keeping the ticket. Says it's the only thing he's ever drawn that didn't end up in the gutter.

Love, Dennis
