Volleyball heartbeat line with script quote
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows a volleyball drawn above a heartbeat trace line, with three lines of cursive script beneath it. The linework is clean and of medium weight, with simple shading on the ball's panels. The composition is centred on the skin, with the text sitting below the heartbeat graphic.

The sports hall at Holbeach smelled of floor polish and the radiators that knocked every time someone served. Dennis Pike had the ball in both hands before the whistle finished, turning it the way his father had shown him in a yard behind the chapel, when the ball was leather and the net was a length of baler twine. At seventy-one he was the oldest man in the Fenland league, and the doctor had told him twice that a man with his history should be watching from the bleachers with a flask of tea.

His grandson Sam set the ball up high for him from the back row, the way they'd practised in the garden all summer. Pat sat on the end of the front bench with the fixtures card on her knee, ticking points in biro and not looking up. "You're going to fall over," she said. "I'm going to fall over at the right end of the court," Dennis said, and she snorted.
The last point went to a tie-break of nine all. He went up for the spike, felt his chest tighten like a fist closing, and came down on the boards with his shoulder first. For a while the only sound was the radiator and a blood-loud thudding in his ears, slow and stubborn. Sam knelt beside him, white as paper, asking if he was all right.
"Not yet," Dennis said, and got himself up on one elbow. The ball had rolled under the bleachers. Somebody's little girl went after it on her hands and knees and came back grinning with the thing held high like a trophy. Pat wrote the winning score on the back of the card, underlined it twice, and handed him the pen.
