Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a man's lower back with his shirt lifted, showing the words WAL MART tattooed in bold black capital letters with a black star in place of the gap between the words. The letters are solid black with clean, even edges and no visible shading. The skin around it is light and the background shows jeans, a brown belt and a patterned wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had the ladder against the side of the Pell★Mart unit at ten past midnight, the retail park under a sky the colour of wet cardboard. The fascia had been up since the nineties and the black letters had gone grey at the edges, the P half-peeled where a gull had taken a liking to it. Her brief was short: strip, prime, repaint in the same house black, and do not, under any circumstances, touch the star.

The star was the reason the job had come to her. Head office had sent a memo about the chain's heritage look, and the only sign-writer still working in the valley who remembered how the original was cut was Ruth, who had learned her letters from her father in a workshop above a chip shop. He had made that star with one loaded stroke of a sable, the wrist turned sharp at each point, and he had taught her that a good star should look like it could be thrown.

She worked until the sodium lights along the car park began to hum louder than the traffic. Halfway through the second M, a lad in a hi-vis vest came out for a cigarette, watched her a while, and said, "My nan worked the tills here when it opened." Ruth said nothing. She dipped the brush, drew the last point of the star, and stepped down the ladder to see it catch the first grey light coming off the ring road.
