Stacked lettering on both calves
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A person is seen from behind in plaid shorts and a white top, standing in a shop aisle beside a shopping trolley. The words WHITE and TRASH are inked vertically down the left and right calves in solid black serif capitals. The image is a clear, evenly lit photograph taken at eye level, with the shoes showing orange laces.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ladder wobbled every time a trolley rattled past, so Ruth stopped counting the rattles and counted her strokes instead. Her father had taught her that a serif capital is two jobs: the stem must be straight as a fence post, and the little feet at top and bottom must look as though nobody thought about them at all. Down the pillar beside aisle nine she set the letters one beneath another, C, O, R, N, while the store manager stood below holding a tea he kept forgetting to drink.

He wanted the name running downward because the pillar was narrow and the shelves were low, and nobody reads a shelf end sideways anyway. Ruth thought the finished column looked like something standing up on its own. A boy in a school jumper stopped by the tinned peaches and read it aloud, slowly, letter by letter, the way you test a stair you are not sure of.
When she came down, her hands were black to the wrist and the manager had finally drunk his tea, cold. He asked what she charged. She told him the truth, which was less than her father would have asked and more than she had been paid for the last job. He nodded at the pillar as though it had always been there.
Her father would have said that was the whole trade: make a thing look as if it always belonged where it stands.
