HTML head and body tags on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck and head, with the face not visible. Two lines of black HTML closing and opening tags, reading </head> and <body>, sit centrally on the neck. The ink is solid black with no shading, against a plain background and a khaki cap.

You inherit the Hollinmere Junction timetable page on a Tuesday, when Dennis from the signalling contractor has already gone to Spain and left a folder marked DO NOT TOUCH. Inside the source file, the first lines open a head section and never close it, so the browser has been reading the station's whole life as a preamble. For eleven years the public screen in the concourse has shown nothing but a grey box that says Loading, and commuters have stood beneath it like people waiting for a sermon that never starts.

You find the missing closing tag almost by accident, scrolling past a comment that reads 'do not close this, it breaks the board.' You type it in anyway, then the opening body tag that Dennis left waiting underneath, the room where the departures are supposed to live. Nothing happens for a whole minute. The kettle in the staff room clicks off. A pigeon lands on the gantry and thinks better of it.
Then the screen flickers, and the first line appears: 06:14 to Carlisle, platform two, on time. The line was cancelled in 2009. You check the sum twice and it still says the same thing. By the time you walk down to the platform, a small crowd is already there, quietly holding their tickets, some of them looking tired in the way people do when they have been early for a very long time. The train pulls in exactly on time, and nobody seems surprised except you.
