Walrus in beanie and striped jumper
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A cartoon walrus wears a red knitted beanie and a red and white striped jumper, with a curved pipe and puffs of smoke beside its face. It sits on a dark blue body with bold black outlines, framed below by orange scrollwork and wave shapes. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with flat colour fills and smooth, even shading.

The walrus came up the slipway at Port Quinnet on the morning the lifeboat was towed in, sat himself on an upturned creel, and asked for a light. Nobody in the harbour bar had ever seen a walrus in a red woollen hat, least of all one smoking a briar pipe with the ease of a man who had paid his rent for thirty years. Old Tamsin Rowe, who kept the nets, said he had the look of a bosun who had been dismissed for being too sensible.

He said his name was Mr Abernethy and that he had come about the Marigold. Her skipper had gone over the side off the Scillies in March, and the insurers had written her off as a loss with all hands, which was a lie, because the skipper had been seen since, walking into the surf at Mullion with a grin and a sack on his shoulder. Mr Abernethy wanted a crew. He wanted men who knew the sea was a bad-tempered landlord and paid its debts in its own currency. Tamsin asked what currency that was. He blew a ring of smoke, and the ring came apart into small grey puffs that drifted off over the water, and he said, Patience, and the tide.
They went out at the turn with the striped sails hung wrong and the waves curling white like the scrollwork painted on the old Marigold's transom. Nobody talked about what they found beyond the rock. Tamsin only says that when they came home the walrus was gone, the creel was still warm, and there was a new pipe on it, carved from driftwood, with a bowl that smelled of salt and tobacco and somebody's good luck.
